Udayam Rehabilitation Centre is a project of Amali Illam Community. It was started in 1993 to provide various services to persons with disabilities. We the Apostolic Carmel Sisters has been working and serving the people of palliagaram and surrounding villages from 1971. We have been successful in our Apostolate.

Through the health programmes mainly the community health programme we were able to heal people, prevented diseases and promoted health. However we felt helpless when people approached as with disabled persons and asked to restore them to normally. As the sisters saw them in the dispensary and in the villages as well, we realized our responsibility to do something for them especially for the children.

Special school and Rehabilitation services for the disabled existed in the cities and towns people belonged to rural area and socially economically back word group are always at a disadvantage whether it be health, Education and other basic needs. The disabled persons belonging to this group were worst affected as their own family had neither means nor time to care for these children. By seeing the situation Sr. Agnesita and the sisters felt the need to help them.

Among the disabled people, the situations of the Mentally Retarded were pathetic. So our first preferences were given to this group. At the beginning of the school there were about 10 children. But slowly the number increased at present we have 120 children with Mentally Challenged children are benefiting from our centre. 75 among them are staying in the hostel for the differently abled. And 10 special educators 2 Physiotherapist and 1 Occupational therapist are working in our school.
Udayam continues to carry out the following services.

3 Vocational training
4 Physiotherapy
5 Occupational Therapy
6 Day care centre at Karunguzhi
7 Integrated programme
8 Community based rehabilitation services.
