ST. TERESA’S CONVENT, KANNUR – 1867

Rev. Fr Mary Louis Martelli OCD, the Vicar of the Holy Trinity Church Kannur wanted to begin the work of education for girls in Kannur and he erected a convent with the financial help from Bishop Michael Antony. When the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparation came from Mangalore his joy was doubled for they took charge of the newly erected Convent in March 1867.This was the beginning of St. Teresa’s Convent. A few boarders too followed the Sisters to Kannur. On 25th August, 1871, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Appiration was incorporated into the Apostolic Carmel and renamed as St. Teresa’s.

In March 1885, Malayalam was introduced in the school as the second language. Rev. Fr.Zanetti SJ purchased the house and compound close to the convent and gave to the sisters for their     use. Mother Marie Des Anges purchased the convent, boarding house, and the school hall with  its premises from Bishop Cavadini in 1901. A building with two stories was completed in 1905. Teachers training school was started in April 1941. In 1950 the Status of the School was raised     to High School. In 2000 the Higher secondary course was started. The foundation stone for the open auditorium was laid by Rev. Fr. Pias Edezhath. The Platinum Jubilee of the Teacher Training school was celebrated on 22 nd February 2016.The Bishop of Kannur Rt. Rev. Alex Vadakkumthala presided over the function. Mother Veronica Santhwana Unit, to care for the Cancer patients and other deserving Cases was inaugurated   by Sr.  Ancilla. The convent chapel was renovated and   re-dedicated in 2017.

In 2019, on the 1 st of April foundation stone was laid for the reconstruction of the Training school by the Monsignor Rev. Fr.Clement Langen, parish priest of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Kannur and was blessed by the Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Alex Vadakkumthala on 22 nd February 2020. During the last 149 years of our mission in Kannur, thousands of students have passed through our Institutions and have reached great heights in all walks of life all over the world.
