Ayroor is a village, about twelve kilometers away from Varkala. It is the north end of the Trivandrum Diocese. St. Thomas Church Ayroor, celebrated its centenary in the year 2011. There are 365 Latin Catholic families belong to this parish. There was a convent of FIH Sisters of Pattathanam till 1985.
In the year 1993 Fr. Rajan a native of the Diocese was appointed as Vicar of St. Thomas Church. During his time at the request of the parishioners in January 1994 Fr. Rajan approached our sisters at Mary Nilayam, Trivandrum to visit the parish in Ayroor. Our then Provincial Sr. Cleta with her council found the place fitting for our apostolate.
With the consent of the bishop, parish priest and the parish council sisters were entrusted the existing private school consisting of L.K.G. to IV Std. they also made agreement as the vacancy arises two posts in St. Thomas aided U.P. School will be given to sisters.
The pioneer Srs. Debora and Remya along with sisters at Mary Nilayam arrived on 26th May 1994. On 16th June 1994 the Holy Eucharist was celebrated by RT. Rev. Dr. Soosa Pakiam, the Bishop of Trivandrum, blessed and consecrated the house to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The name ‘Fatimamatha Convent’ was given when the previous congregation started it. Sr. Maria Vimala was appointed as sister in charge of the house.
As the years passed Srs. Maria Nativita, Mary Kusumam, Maria Sahana, Carithas, Cathorine Antony, Maria Nidhi, Maria Anila and Maria Nithya were appointed as superiors. In the year 2014 due to some unavoidable reasons we gave up the administration of the private school and the teaching post from the U.P. School. So the future of Fatima Convent was entirely hidden from us.
At the visit of our Superior General Sr. Susheela in the year 2014 a ray of hope did shine forth and with the whole hearted cooperation of our Provincial Superior Sr. Ancilla we decided to continue our mission in Ayroor.
At present the community consists of three Srs. Maria Namitha, Sandra Maria and Sr. Maria Nithya as the animator. Since our mission over here is centered on the parish and its people, we make a lot of adjustments in our community living to do our apostolate effectively. We keep in touch with our teaching Charism only through supplementary tuition run by the T.S.S. of the Diocese to all the students of the parish school. By visiting the houses we encourage the families to read the Word of God and make them realize the power of it.
By God’s grace there is much understanding and cooperation between us and the parish priest.
