FATIMA CONVENT, AYROOR, 1994

divider

Ayroor is a village, about twelve kilometers away from Varkala. It is the northern end of the Trivandrum Diocese. There are 365 Latin Catholic families belonging to the parish. In the year 1993, Fr. Rajan, a native of the Diocese, was appointed as Vicar of St. Thomas Church. He approached the sisters at Mary Nilayam, Trivandrum, to visit the parish in Ayroor and start a convent there. The then Provincial Superior, Sr. Cleta, with her council, found the place suitable for the apostolate.

With the consent of the bishop, parish priest, and the parish council, the sisters were entrusted with the existing private school consisting of L.K.G. to IV Std. An agreement was also made that as vacancies arose, two posts in St. Thomas Aided U.P. School would be given to the sisters. On 16th June 1994, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Soosai Pakiam, the Bishop of Trivandrum, who blessed and consecrated the house to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In the year 2014, due to some unavoidable reasons, the administration of the private school and the teaching post at the U.P. School had to be given up. Thus, the future of Fatima Convent was entirely in God’s hands. However, during the visit of the Superior General, Sr. Susheela, in the year 2014, a ray of hope shone forth, and it was decided to continue the mission in Ayroor. Since the mission is centered on the parish and the parishioners, the sisters have had to make many adjustments in community living to effectively carry out the apostolate. The Ayroor community and the parishioners celebrated the silver jubilee of the convent in the year 2019.
