CARMEL SCHOOL, CHANGANACHERRY(1993)
In 1985, Carmel Convent was opened at Madappally, Changanacherry. The late Archbishop Antony Padiyara was pleased to welcome the Apostolic Carmel sisters to his diocese to foster the spiritual and intellectual growth of the local community. The sisters initially engaged in home missions and attended to the needs of the people. At the community’s request, they began an English Medium School to provide affordable education for common and marginalized families.
In June 1993, the school opened with Std. I in rooms already existing within the convent. Under the guidance of Sr. Cartias, then Superior of the house, the school grew, and by May 2002, classes were restructured on the convent’s upper floors, offering Std. I to Std. IV for 170 students with seven staff members. Student numbers rose steadily, thanks to the dedicated service of the management and staff.
To accommodate this growth, an additional 2.29 acres of land was purchased in Vakkelpady in 2014, supplementing the existing property. A new building with enhanced facilities was inaugurated on April 9th, 2015, by Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Perumthottam, Archbishop of Changanacherry. The school remains affordable, with fee concessions and free books provided for students in need.
The curriculum includes keyboard, band, music, and dance classes to nurture students’ talents, along with Value Education classes that promote moral values, love of God and neighbor, respect for elders, and harmony across all castes and creeds. The school moves forward with optimism, guided by the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, aspiring to reach greater heights.
