PROVIDENCE L P SCHOOL, KOZHIKODE (1919)

The flourishing of this institution was a dream come true, enlightening innumerable hearts and minds with the message: “A girl child also has the right to education.” The public welcomes this institution with pride and joy as it has created an impact in their minds that girl children will never be deprived of education as long as Providence L.P. School exists in Kozhikode. This vision has certainly been truthful, and the venture a great success, illuminating the lives of innumerable girl children who have reached greater heights in all aspects.

“The mercies of the Lord, I shall sing forever.” These words of the Psalmist can fittingly be echoed by this institution completing its 98 years of existence. Next to divine Providence, this school owes its existence to the public-spirited citizens of Calicut. The Indian officials and the businessmen desired a Convent-oriented English Education for their children. The St. Joseph’s Convent school, mainly for Anglo Indians, could receive only a very limited number of Indian students. A mammoth memorandum from the leading officials and businessmen wrested from Government the sanction to start an English Medium Secondary School in 1919. Sister Leonora was the moving spirit from its inception. Dr. Barboza’s Cottage, named “Providence” near St. Joseph’s Convent was on sale. The convent purchased the place, and the school started on June 23rd, 1919, named “Providence.” The sanction for Providence L.P. School was received on 25th January 1920.

“Providence can provide. Providence did provide. Providence will provide.” Oh most merciful and all-provident God, hear our prayers and grant our petition.

The motto of our school was “Samper Sperana” (ever hopeful). In 1961, as per the order of D.P.I, the lower primary section started to function independently.

In 2003, the long-cherished desire for a new building for the L.P. School was actualized, with 8 classrooms and an office room, thanks to the wholehearted cooperation of the management and PTA. The building was blessed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Kalathilparambil and inaugurated by Sri. K. Muraleedharan M.P.
